Sounds like fun!
I always think it is a good idea to ask the locals, or someone who has been there before. I always trust advice from a person over a guide book.
I usually google the area i’m interested in and see if i can find places and new things to do.sometimes it works out and we find a cool thing to do other times it dosen’t work.
Sounds like a great giveaway! Thanks
My tip is ASK A NATIVE. Or, just marry one (grin). My husband is from San Diego. He asked me to marry him on the beach at La Jolla, and then we had dinner at a wonderful little place called Filippi’s Pizza Grotto. We live in Texas now but got to go back there, and visit some other fun spots with our kids, last February. There are so many spots I wouldn’t have known about if I had gone before I met my husband.
Great giveaway!
If it has bright flashy lights and a water park, it’s probably a tourist trap. I like to google places or if I’m just driving around, follow the scenic route or read the signs on the side of the road. I’ve found so many interesting places just by reading road signs to find places I’d like to visit. I found a lovely secret beach in my area just by using google.
I have found the BEST way to find the hot spots and best deals on things like restaurants is to ask the locals! Ask them to recommend a budget place or a kid friendly please. We have found so many wonderful deals and all around great places this way!
Thanks for this Super Fantastic Giveaway! *crossing fingers and toes*

Here is an idea which is a little unorthodox and I wouldn’t recommend to everyone, as it could prove dangerous in some areas, but it’s taken me to some fascinating places!
Often in tourist locations, such as Maui, if you rent a car you and tour around you may come across a sign which says ‘Locals Only’. Now, that’s not an official government sign – usually it’s just the ‘locals’ way of saying tourists are not welcome.
A sign like that never deters my husband. He always wants to see what is at the end the road…. sometimes ending up talking to locals and learning fascinating information about the area! Most people like to ‘talk’ about their little piece of paradise and if you aren’t too pushy or rude, you will be welcomed and perhaps see ‘real life’!
As I said – it’s not for everyone!
My family has found that the best way to explore and discover things off the normal path is to drive around! One day, we went to Glenn Rose (Texas) and we discovered that Dublin was only 30 minutes away! We’ve always wanted to go to Dublin but discovered much more when we were there! We saw the original Dr. Pepper Bottling Plan and an Alley Way with the coolest murals I’ve ever seen! It was like we weren’t even in Texas!
texas_heartland84[at]yahoo[dot]com
I’d check with a local tourist info office (not a travel agency), local newspapers, local people. Word of mouth is the best way to learn about things like this
I always like to talk to someone who lives or has lived in a location. If I am not able to do that before I arrive I will ask cab drivers, or folks working in local establishments I also like to look at their local papers, not the tourist magazines.
I find a lot of my “off the beaten path” ideas from people’s blogs!
We recently went on a cruise with 5 ports in the eastern carribbean. Before we went, my Mom googled all the places to find out where the best and quieter beaches were. Wow, did we ever find some beautiful places! One of the beaches only had 30 other people on it but still had a bar and a local bbq business that was delicious. It was so nice to find some great places that weren’t filled with locals trying to sell us something every 5 mins.
I agree with asking the local people. They live around there and they would know where a good place is.
I try to read the local paper, find coupons, ask people who have been there, etc.!
I do a lot of research before we go and request the travel guides from the state’s tourism office. Then I try to talk to someone who has been there recently (a local or other visitor) and get their take on any great places to hit while we are there.
We take day trips all the time. What we usually do is take out a map, close our eyes, point to a place and that’s where we go. Once we know the name we mapquest the directions and look up the towns website. The official town websites always have great ideas for state parks, restaurants, museums etc. We have found some great places that way.
I like to look online at wikipedia, a travel website, or about.com before I go anywhere. thanks for the chance to win.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee pls let me win pls pls pls i want to take an online art course SO bad and i don’t have the money.
thank you for such a giving heart pls add me
altermyworld(dot)angw(at)gmail(dot)com
talk to people…go to a local diner or hang-out and ask around.
that’s how we’ve found some of the best places.
I think the best way is to search internet, but instead of taking the first thing you see, scroll and read the visitor reviews. That is the best way to find out which attractions really are worth your time.
I try to find the zanyiest travel books I can find. The Irreverent Guides by Fodors are great. I also great are the Underground Guides, Off the Beaten Path Guides and Avant Guides. Sometimes I just type into Amazon for example “Weird New York” and I usually find some cool books. Also, when I see or hear about something unique I write it on an index card and keep i t in a box organized by states. So when I am planning a trip, I just get them out and add them to the itinerary! Thanks for the chance to win!!!

Always ask the locals — they know whats up!
harleydiven (at) gmail (dot) com
i love to ask whoever is waiting on me. waitress, cab driver, you know the people who i meet in that area. usually they give the best little unknown places that end up being a blast!
I like to do research on the are I’m traveling to online before going. I also talk to friends who have visited area, and ask the locals what they like to do once I’m there.
We have 2 books that were made by a local tv personality called one tank trips that literally are off the beaten path locally that you can get to in a tank of gas
We found our favorite Sunday breakfast spot by flipping through the program from the Fern Street Circus — a local (San Diego) circus troupe. Also, a great resource for checking things out is yelp. The yelp community here in SD is great. Also, for brunch, if there’s a bunch of people waiting around, there’s got to be a good reason! Can you tell we like brunch?
As for activities, I just look around and luckily my 5 year old is pretty much up for anything.
please enter me.thanks
We do a search to read reviews from past guest. We also ask friends & family of places that they have been to & would recommend to us. gracebooks@embaramail.com
I like to surf the net first for the place I’ll visit. Read some travel blogs for pros and cons of that place. If available, I’ll ask some friends if they were there before.
i was so excited i forgot my tip, make friends with your librarian …..librrians are a wealth of info.
ANg
Don’t be afraid to just explore. Get off the beaten path for awhile. Take some side streets. You can most likely recognize the locals from the tourists. Be on the look out for places they are going. And just stop in, act natural, keep your camera in your purse not around your neck. My husband and i travelled all around Europe this way. And when we were in San Diego we went to a few of the must do tourist places, but we also just drove around looking for some local hangouts and found some nice places. And don’t be afraid to talk to people and ask for suggestions. You can spot a good place by noticing the way people are dressed.
What we like to do is goto the Chamber of Commerence and ask them and then even to get into a friendly conversation with others that live there and ask them about the town/place and anyplace that they would suggest we go see.
My tips is going to some traveling mailing list on the internet. You can read their opinion or ask one. If none available, the best thing is asking the local people.
I wish I knew! Everyone mentioned some great things. One thing that I find works is just to be experimental. I’ve taken chances on restaurants that I pass in my daily commute that I’ve known nothing about. Sometimes it’s a bust, but other times it’s been great!
I ask other people from my children’s school.. at least i know i can trust their opinion… thanks for the entry
$50 sounds really good to my pocket!
I take random, spontaneous turns while driving.I’ve discovered amazing spots this way
I think the best way is to ask around.
I love to ask store clerks from places that I shop where good places to eat are. They always know somewhere unique and fun! Thanks
Ashlm85 (at) aol (dot) com
Do you homework ahead of time! Read a bunch of books, and ask around. I always feel a personal reference is worth any book review.
I will find a travel book about the place and ask people around about some interesting places in that area.
We always ask the locals. Actually to be more specific we always ask the waiter/ress at the Denny’s we eat at!
Thanks for the Entry
Tonyamcrain[at] aol[dot]com
Always chat with the locals…they can always tell you the best places to see or eat.
A lot of tourists don’t like to stray too far from their hotels. Don’t be afraid to drive around! If you get lost, you can always ask for directions.
Asking family, relatives or friends about exotic places they would recommend is the best way. Personal opinion from the living witness will be better than review from books. Thanks for the giveaway!
I plan our family trips. We’ve been all over the country, and believe it or not, we’ve always gotten great tips from the people that rent us our cars! They’re invariably local people, and they tip us off to what to avoid and what not to miss. Case in point….we went to Albuquerque, and the guy told us about a place to get enchiladas with “Christmas” salsa topping. He said it was in a drugstore. In a million years we would never have thought to go eat there. Best food of the trip! Bottom line? Don’t be shy when traveling, ask people.
Great! Find information from travel agent about specific place you like to know. Be creative! Just explore the place yourself with/without local guide. Who knows you’ll discover the paradise out there…
Well, alot of times I just check out our local newspaper. I’ll see what family events are coming up, most are free. I prefer staying within an hr of home.
Awesome giveaway!! Enter me, thanks!!
I wouldn’t say that I have any tricks for finding places to go and things to do … I stick to asking advice from those that have been there before.

My problem is that I love the touristy-trap things almost the best – especially the not well known ones that are just the “oddest” places. My tip is to intentionally turn off the highway and wander… try to get lost & talk to some locals to find our way back on track – and hopefully find some awesome spots to stop along the way.
Wow, thanks for the awesome giveaway! This blog is fantastic, I just subscribed to your RSS via Yahoo so I can stay updated!
To find fun places, I often like to use Google to do local searches. You can find some really cute places you may have overlooked otherwise. It’s even helpful to ask around on online message boards! Some local forums are very nice and friendly and will answer questions and give suggestions if you ask for them.
I also like to just explore. When you’re at your destination, do some walking around, even ask the locals. You can find the best places to eat this way, you can even find out what areas of town are least expensive. Usually you’ll find one or two locals who don’t mind giving you the low-down on hot spots.
Online research really does help, so use your computer. Also, keep a map handy, I cannot stress that enough. You will need it at some point!
If you’re going to an unfamiliar place, I also suggest starting your day early. Nothing is worse than getting lost or wondering into an unsafe area by mistake, after dark.
This was fun! Thanks for reading my suggestions, hope you like them

Yelp. But if it’s got a “B” in the window, best to try something else.
check out the camber of commerce where ever you want to go! They have tons of information on not only popular torist attrations but local favorites too!
I always go to AAA when I am planning to go someplace new, they always know of hidden treasures! And, knowing / asking a local person is definitely a sure thing!
Maegan
How fun!! I might even spend this on myself:)
I like to read travel blogs to see what people like to say about the area. I also like to ask people who live in that town, what they would suggest for us to visit.
TV. Honestly – seeing restaurants on Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins or National Parks. Some of the best spots are spotlighted on HGTV, Discovery, Food Network, etc.
I love to use the website tripadvisor.com because it features reviews by people who have visited the area and forums to chat with locals about the places they love to go!
i like to ask local people for ideas. they know the nooks and crannies of your destination and can help you go to places you never knew about.
my friends and I keep eachother informed about community events at libraries, nature reserves, museums, ect that are offered free. They are often the funnest, plus the most educational things for our kids, and still interesting for the adults. since we live in different counties, we get a good variety of things to do…all for free!
margelina@comcast.net
I always do a bit of reading online before traveling somewhere. Search for reviews of places and stuff to see if they’re worth it. And if you’re traveling someplace where you have a friend who stays there, even better. Get them to tell you about the places and whether it’s worthwhile or not.
Usually, I would talk to local people because they know more which places are beautiful but with less tourist. I learned that when I was living in Phuket, Thailand.
Off the beaten path? Well if I am not sure about the area and want to get a feel for the culture I tend to ask someone who is a local. The locals always know the best places to hang out, eat, shop and explore and are more than willing to help a person out if they ask nicely.
I ask people who live there, rather than just sticking to the guidebooks. And I look online for blogs and reports of people who have been to the place I plan to visit!
Ask around. Talk to your friends. Go online. Our local paper has great listings of local community events and places to go. I like the AAA Tour books. I always get one for whatever state we’re going to, and I always get the new one for our state each year. They’re full of fun things that you might not think about.
When we get ready for a trip, my husband and I usually Google attractions and we plan from that. It would be nice if there was a non-biased website where you could find ALL the attractions “off the beaten path”
Hmmm…the best tip I can think of is to know a local, or to find one. Surely someone you know knows someone who lives there, you know? Email that person in advance and get recommendations from him/her.
I check out the grocery stores. Most stores have free magazines near the gumball machines and stuff. You can find coupons for attractions and restaurants in them. We have also eaten in a local place and started a conversation with some locals..they are usually more than happy to share with us about some cool places to stop at. We have also used the site city-data(dot)com for different areas..local residents comment on the forum there and answer questions..so helpful! Hope this was helpful info for ya…have a good night!
sandalsndaisies(at)yahoo9dot)com
I would pick up a local independent newspaper and see what kinds of things are on their calendar.
When we plan on visiting somewhere that we are not familiar with, I ask friends or family if I haave any that live in the area or I will go to a public online community to ask for ideas. Thanks for the chance to enter!!
I actually like the tourist traps, but to find something off the beaten path we’ve always had the best success talking to the local waitresses, hotel desk clerks and shop keepers. In advance of your trip you can always check the online edition (if available) of the local paper for festivals, fairs and such.
I cant believe no one has mentioned this – it has to be the best way to find the steals, deals and best places to eat, roam and go to off the beaten path anywhere in the US.. its called Mr. Cheap’s – you can find them for just about any city your planning to go to in the US. Mr. Cheap’s Boston lists all the local places that are great that no one knows about so of course when heading to New York I bought Mr. Cheap’s New York</b?. Also buy one of those plastic covered street indexes so you can find the places! This is the easiest way to find all the goodies before you get there!
Sweet prize, Im in!
awesome paypal!!!
I google EVERYTHING and search the internet before all our trips, for tips and coupons and ideas!
I have to agree with a lot of the other posters. The best way to discover out of the way places that are off the beaten path is to ask the locals. It worked out well for my parents and I while we were in Ireland four years ago.
Karin
karin.theisen[at]gmail[dot]com
Google. I also have called a local church and talked to the secretary… they know everything.
Oh, lots of times we’ll ask around town when we’re out and about. If we eat a meal somewhere, we might ask the server about places to go. We talk to anyone, ask lots of questions, and do lots of listening.
I think much of life that is valuable often passes us by because we’re looking for something else.
the best thing to do is ask someone local about the best spots.. person lives there.. i’m pretty sure they know great places for first timers
my tip is when you visited a destination, determine if there are more foreign or native people there. If you’re into mingle with the locals then you should go where they hang out, alternatively, if you like famous tourist’s spot go visit places with fellow tourists flocking in. When you’re a typical non adventurer tourist I suggest you avoid places where locals hang out, because it’s usually a market, someone has a funeral, or a wedding. This tips is particularly useful when you visit a country which people is in different race or talk different language than you. Know your preference and follow your crowd.
Usually I ask people who live there, or we just go on random drives.
aahaft@gmail.com
I like to visit different forums and ask for suggestions from the members. Chances are good someone lives there or has visited and know first hand what is great to visit!
Hmmm, difficult. To avoid tourist traps, I think you must be in one then avoid it next time!? LOL. Seriously, I like to explore Dubai’s less glitzy, less opulent areas so we walk around, I mean walk a lot and ask a couple of people in the streets. With traveling and touring, it’s all experiment!
Thanks for the great giveaway!
I like to go online and fine a local message board for the area I plan on visiting. Sometimes I will ask about the area or others I will just read what the people have to say about their hometown.
arlene
We usually look for the smallest stand/store/booth with the biggest line. Locals won’t usually wait in line for anything just because.. it’s either good food, cheap, or both. Follow the Locals!!
ariadne19 at gmail dot com
The people who work at record shops typically have good advice.
There are so many different ways to find awesome places off the beaten path. My husband and I are big fans of Anthony Bourdain:No Reservations, he defininitely goes of the beaten path. We love to watch travel channel, food network and the history channel. You’d be surprised how much tohse help. We also love to ask locals and go to the bookstores and look in the “local interests” section. Thanks for the giveaway!
When we travel we try find some place to eat a late lunch that’s got a local feel, not during the peak lunch time. Then ask the wait staff about near by things, staying out of the main tourist areas, other customers will join in too. We’ve had good luck with this when were out.
I’m the same as other people, ask locals! Especially for places to eat, types of food, local shops, weekend events, etc. Also, many cities, at least major ones have their own website(s). Phoenix has one that shows the local things to do as a family, young adult, teens, whatever! The local newspapers will also tell you of the events going on and places to see
Before we go on a trip we usually go on the internet and do some research on the area we are going to – things like looking on the town’s website or parks and recreation site. We also get the local paper and often some coupon flyers, where you can find some local places
I think if you do some online research and find one definitely cool place and go there, ask people who work there where they like in the same area.
I alwyas talk to the locals tey always know of the off the beaten path stuff
I’m a total internet junkie when it comes to that kind of stuff. You can probably find someone online talking about things to do off the beaten path. Also, find someone who lives there or lived there and talk to them. Have fun!
Ask your local friends at work, school, church, the gym, etc. Thanks for the giveaway!
Very good question. I always google, look for travel forums of discussion groups for the area…Ask lots of questions. I research as much as possible.
This really puts me at ease in our travels.
Great give away.
If I win…I am gona use this to buy rice and beans for a mission trip we are taking to Mexico….we are going to take these items to the locals who are very poor.
Thanks
I look in the calendar section of the paper. I occasionally check on-line. I try to do things within my city limits. The library is a great resource for local events.
This giveaway is awesome and so are YOU!!!
ahhh let the suck up, hmm? yes? YES??? whoohoo!
Great giveaway! I first look online at reviews because if its not good someone is going to make sure you know it! lol then ask family or friends if they have been before I decide.
don’t be afraid to get lost… and ask people in regular places like grocery stores or shops.
If I know where I’m heading, I check each town’s official website for great local restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
I look on the internet or ask the locals. Not that we really go anywhere or anything. Kat
leekat6 AT verizon DOT net
I must say that I personally love road trips with car. With a car you get to places that are hard to get to. For example we once found a superb beach near a sheep farm in Estonia. Not near any big roads and if it wasn’t for our curious mind, we would have never gotten there. So really, explore roads that look like they don’t lead anywhere. There’s always something in the end, and if you’re lucky, it’s something really special
Thanks so much for this great giveaway… who couldn’t use an extra $50 to spend!
I like to Google places we’re thinking about traveling to I read the reviews. And, I have sent emails to people that live in the area. If I find the Chamber of Commerce for that area, I call them and ask which I guess is a way of asking the locals, too!
Have a blessed day!
Penny
http://www.pennylaneboutique.com
I usually just ask a local, maybe a waitress or even the concierge if we’re staying at a hotel. I also get lost a lot, so it’s easy to find the out-of-the-way places that way too!
I do lots of searching on the internet look at travel forums and look for the towns website and chamber of commerce site.
We also like to take side roads, get off the beaten path.
Thank you for keeping it simple! Never been to CA but hope to some day. Nice blog for ideas!
peggie dot loden at gmail dot com
Ask the locals. Do what the locals would do – usually if there are laid-back places where you see lots of locals hanging about, the food there might be tasty! Also, ask friends who have been there or stay there. And do your research! GOOGLE!
I usually google the area I want to visit. I go to AAA and get a travel booklet and read over that too. I often email friends and ask if anyone has been to the area and what do they recommend.
Besides research on-line, in books, and from friends and associates, and asking locals when one arrives, I try to find an online chat room from the area. People are MORE than happy to tell you what’s going on CURRENTLY and how to get there (and if there’s disagreement it gets worked out by the people with the most knowledge)! I had a friend who was asked to do an artist residency in Iceland once and this was the first time I had the idea of finding an on-line chatroom. When I got to the entrance for the chatroom, it was in Icelandic, but I guessed about what to put down (like a name to use there) and once I got in, most of the people (from all over the world, many who had visited Iceland) were talking in English! So it worked out VERY well and I got tons of info that my friend was then able to use (even some contacts, people who said “Go visit my friend so and so, I’ll tell them that you’re coming!”).
I ask some friends or relatives and search on web too!
This giveaway is really great! I love it.
I get all my best tips on where to go/where to avoid at the playground. Take my kids to the park and strike up a conversation with the other mothers.
I usually look to see if the place has a website, and then look for feedback on it from other people online.
Hmm, I like to go to a local museum and often they have information on other collections in the area that aren’t tourist traps (and also to ask the folk who work there as personal recommendations are best).
I am an internet junkie, if we’re heading somewhere new I spend weeks searching and researching to find the best things. Of course, then the things we just happen to stumble upon are usually where our best memories are made!!! But I love that I can find a place, get their marketing take on it but then search around and find out what real people have said about it. It’s basically asking the locals, just before we get there. I have a serious need to have some plans before we leave for soemwhere, even if it all gets through out the window for something else when we get there, I HAVE to have a plan.
what a great giveaway!
I go by word of mouth and if something strikes me I google it and look deeper into it! Thanks for the great giveaway!
Who doesn’t want $50? Thanks for the contest!
I usually try to find friends who have done it before and ask them where/what I should do.
I use the internet and google places I want to go to by checking the state map and plugging in nearby cities. In addition, these blogs are a fantastic tool to find new places/ideas/products. Do a blog search on google using their blog search engine. Asking friends and relatives for ideas is another idea.
Thanks for the great giveaway! I’ve found that sometimes the tiny little dumpy places are the best for a unique experience, far away from all the big touristy stuff!
Thank you! If I do win… my paypal e-mail addy is a different one
Thanks.
Explore. We drive around and ty to find neat places. The best one seem to be the ones we come on by accident. I also look on the interenet a lot.
Thanks for the giveaway.
My best resource for finding fun things to do is talking with moms whose children are a little older than mine. They’ve found the fun things already, and remember them.
I use the interenet for all my research! I search maps, chamber of commerce sites, google searches. I rely on the kindness of strangers to answer questions.
thank you for this opportunity!
If locals are there, then it is most likely not a tourist trap.
Exp: Disney World is great during the holidays IF you visit the hotels. Each hotel is decorated differently. Some have gingerbread or candy created creations that are almost life-size. Some have live music players. Some have roasted chestnuts. :Locals know the secrets. Ask them.
I share, will you???
Thank you ad come and visit to enjoy a cheap but great way to visit Disney.
We have moved around a bit since we have been married and I usually ask someone older that has been in the area for awhile. They tend to know the stuff that is not as well known and it usually fits are style as we don’t want to spend much money and enjoy doing what is less popular and touristy. Except for the zoos–we love zoos!
My tip is ask the locals, someone who has been there before or do internet research of the area first. Thank you for the great giveaway!

Great giveaway thanks

My tip is to ask around on message boards before you travel. Oftentimes you will be able to get great tips from people who live in the area, and you might also get a chance to meet some of your online friends in person.
Thank you for the chance to win!
I wish I had seen your blog a week ago – ,my husband went to SD for a conference!
I always check egullet.com for restaurant suggestions and have never been disappointed!
There are several ways to discover local off the beaten path places to eat or visit.
1 – Ask your friends native to the location, ask the locals, ask employees of local businesses specifically about less tourist areas.
2 – Get on social networks where locals hang out and ask the question.
3 – Try MeetUp.com and find and join the local adventure group.
4 – Check out local sites like Yelp that user generated content and ratings.
5 – Opentable.com is a great way to find new restaurants.
6 – Google key phrases such as ‘off the beaten path restaurant san diego’, ‘favorite of the locals san diego’ etc. until you find something interesting.
7 – Check local newspapers such as the Reader and look for upcoming events.
8 – Check calendar sites such as Eventful.com, Upcoming.org and others.
9 – Check out Switchboard.com and search by distance in any given zip code for restaurants. Make an agreement to try new places all the time.
10 – And of course, check out sites like Beyond the Zoo that are always out and about finding and sharing new locations to check out.
And my request to you: If you find a restaurant or local business that lacks a website or is in need of an upgrade, point them my way. ProRestaurantMarketing.com
Find a restaurant review site and check out reviews. Those are almost always populated by reviews from locals.
We like to research our destination before we go. I look the area up online for weeks! I always have loads of fun things to do that lots of travelers don’t know about.
If your going to a big tourist place (like Disney World or Hawaii), you can find loads of books on amazon or other book stores that have “off the beaten path” places to check out.
Otherwise, google, google, google!
Thanks for the great giveaway!!

Here’s a handy tip for discovering off-the-beaten-path goodness, brought to you by your 1970’s moms: ask a police officer. While I’m not suggesting that you do anything as crazy as jaywalking in order to actually meet an officer of the law, you might have to get a little creative to strike up a conversation! I’d avoid any reference to donut shops, though…
the internet has been a great reference!!
Okay, 50.00 sent to my paypal would be remarkable right now, especially when I’m really needing to purchase some new hair care products from salon savings dot com…really, I do this once a year and it will last me that long if not more. So, my tip is, shop at savings departments and bulk up on the sales. You’ll be amazed at how much money can be saved (especially when you by with the promotion of free shipping with a certain amount ordered). I buy once a year and shop the discontinued section and save big. And what’s more, they are all salon style hair care products but at much better prices.
Please count me in, love the giveaway!

My favorite way is just to choose an area and start exploring, on foot if possible. I usually go online to get an idea of what neighborhoods I would be interested in, and to see if there’s any hidden gems I can find. I also like to check out any local free weeklies as well.
I go to couchsurfing.com to their events section to see if anyone has listed events where I am going!
Honestly? We drive around places we’ve never been. If we see something that looks interesting, we investigate.
I love talking to people — and seeing what we can find to do for free. Google is awesome too. We’ve discovered so much by walking an area like La Jolla Village or Mission Hills or Little Italy.
natalie@thebobbypin.com
I try to keep a clipping folder for local gems – sometimes I find ideas in the local papers for areas to visit, sometimes I’ll see restaurant ideas on forums. I’m pretty hit or miss on it though. I like to find (through tons of internet research) at least one unique place I’d like to visit, and then I explore from there once I’m actually there. And I agree, if you get a chance to ask a local you might get some good ideas.
I look for places that aren’t chains–if it’s an independent business, it’s probably worth seeing.
Come enter my Target GC giveaway!
i always browse thrift and antique stores in new areas of the country or state. The people are friendly and you can ask them tons of questions without hassle. They tell you things you never would find on google or just on teh tourist strip.
I’m having so much fun making friends and blog-hopping again this year.
Thanks for such a generous giveaway! I hope I’m chosen as the lucky winner!!!
Ask the locals and do research before going. That is what we have always done and we have always had a great time. Thanks for the great giveaway.
ninahackebeil at gmail dot com
We like to find a little mom & pop restaurant then ask the locals for tips of what to do and see. Sometimes you can find tips like this online, but not often. Once when I had a rental car in Mystic, CT I just drove and drove anywhere the roads took me and then let the GPS system guide me back to the hotel… that was a blast!
dinnertimechimes at aol dot com
i look forplaces that *aren’t* in a travel guide, tend to be small, maybe not ascleaner, and filledwith locals!
anything flashy or sold in bundles or featuring large crowds is often a tourist trap. also anything extremely stereotypical!
thanks for this giveaway!
Asking the locals is a good start, but if you have internet access I would suggest looking up a local site that is hosted by a news station. They always have links to local events and restaurants that aren’t on the normal tourist list. One of our stations has “Florida on a Tankful” and they show places that you can go from the Tampa area on a tank of gas, some of them are quite interesting and obscure too!
I like to google the area as well. I check out all the details of the town on their website and even google for coupons that may be available.
Before we book the trip we usually try to find someone we know that has been there before to tell us the good stuff. After we arrive, we try to befriend the hotel receptionist and some of the locals to give us the head’s up! Thanks for the awesome giveaway! I hope you have a wonderful day!
diane@diane-anderson.com
When I travel, one of the first things I like to do is find a good, local restaurant. Sometimes I ask locals what their favorite restaurant in town is, or I just pick one. The servers usually know a lot about the area and I ask them the places they like to go that tourists may miss (:
Mannie, MannieMandible@yahoo.com
I think simply asking a “local” is the easiest/quickest way to know where the hidden gems are in a foreign town!
Thanks for the giveaway!
taking turns with other families trying things out. that way if my family loves (or hates) something, we spread the word to everyone else and vice versa.
I’d ask friends who have visited the place I am going to – or who live there!
I ask my hotel or book through my cruise. A great show to get tips is Samantha Brown. She always has great travel ideas for every destination.
I think it is always a good idea to talk to someone who has already been there before visiting an attraction. Also, if I don’t know someone who has been there, sometimes I can find reviews online.
We were at the San Diego zoo 2 years ago and I fell in love with the pandas they are so cute
I usually ask people who live there. For example, walk into an area 7-11 and ask the person behind the counter. This person will usually mention things that wont be the “touristy” things.
I learned this from Rachel Ray: ASK THE LOCALS. They know all the best places to eat and visit. Sometimes their recommendations are off the beaten path, but usually totally worth it! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!
I like to take road trips with my kids. Usually if we see some kind of “mom and pop” sort of place, it’s almost always worth a stop. Steer clear of neon and billboards. It could be interesting but probably expensive…someone has to pay for the signs, right?
i take the time to read a professional and up to date travel book about the area. while not always covering everything thats available, they give you a price range and a review. thus far, i havent been disappointed!
I like to pick up a local paper when we are vacationing to see what events are happening while we are there. A lot of the events are geared towards people that live in the area, so many tourists may not know about them.
Thank you for having this!
I would love to win. I always like to look online before I take a trip and ask the locals when I get there. Take a slow drive and see where the cars are
Thank you
tatertot374@sbcglobal.net
We research online and in the bookstore before we go anywhere we haven’t been. We don’t rely much on friends because they usually just go the same places all the other tourists go and that’s not how we travel. Our motto is to travel like a local. We also get a detail local map and take a good look at it for parks, museums, beaches, historical sites, etc. that may not be mentioned in a guidebook.
I belong to a large online community so i always post my questions on the forums there asking for advice from people who have been there and also people who live in the area that I am ginog to visit! I also tend to chat up whoever I am sitting next to on the plane and if they are a local, I ask for recommendations!
daytoncat1(at)yahoo(dot)com
We always take the exits for places such as the Dizzy Dean museum or Big Tree state park or some such stuff as that. We’ll even take exits for antique shops that have hard to read signs off the interstate.
I agree with a lot of other people. Ask the locals or search the internet.
I like tripadvisor.com… or talk to someone who has been there or who lives there.
I typically google free things to do in the city, and start my search there. Typically you can find smaller art galleries or farmers markets, maybe the occasional concert or movie in a park. If I hit up a farmer’s market, then I’ll ask around about the best stuff to do or great places to eat. If I’m looking for food, and haven’t had the opportunity to ask locals, I’ll ask a cop. They usually know the best places for good eats that are inexpensive.
I think the best discovery I made was an accident, really… but it showed something on a map and said it had rustic cabins. We rented one and found that Chipokes Plantation in VA is one of the most amazing places to stay and is right near Colonial WIlliamsburg and many other neat things.
But, since then, I’ve searched the internet for tips, and tried to talk to people who’d been there before me, as well as taking note as we drive by the off the regular path places of things I want to come back and see… someday.
alaskawildrose AT gmail DOT com
I belong to a couple travel forums and always ask for advice before I go. You sometimes get a bum steer, but for the most part online communities are very helpful.
When we’re planning a trip, I spend a LOT of time online researching. Doing this, I’ve been able to discover many “treasure” spots that I never would have found otherwise. What a great prize – thank you!
My husband and I always stop at a local pizza place and ask what the best things to do in the area are. They drive all around for deliveries, so maybe they know of a fun weekend spot that no one else does.
I watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. LOL! They show unique places with awesome food. We’ve been to a few and everytime, there are some cool things and shops to see and do near by.
Thanks for the chance to win!
Sarah
sarah@thepitterpatterboutique.com
I just pick someone at random and walk up to them and ask. My husband get’s embarrassed but I don’t care.
Thanks for the giveaway:)
angelacisco at rocketmail.com
I usually just ask someone for a place to go
Usually it’s when I get lost that I find the best places.
My hubby and I like to pick a direction and walk around whatever city we are visiting. We find so many neat things when we just wander around the streets and it helps us feel like we are getting a better feel for the city than hitting all the tourist traps. Thanks for the chance
I Google the area we may be visiting and look for the place that seems to be the most ‘touristy’. On our first day in the location I visit the ‘touristy’ site and find someone who actually works there and ask them for a few minutes of their time. I introduce myself and let them know we are visiting the area and we want to get away from the tourist trap areas and get to know the real location. If I’m talking to someone who actually lives in the area they are always quick to point out the ‘hot spots’ for locals and that’s were we go. I’ve never been disappointed.
Linda.Stewart(at)drakesoftware.com
I always ask around if any one has been there and where to go, usually someone has! Its a small world
We usually ask the locals – someone at the hotel desk or in a restaurant.
I usually call the Dept of Commerce for the area you want to go. The people there usually know great, out of the way places to check out.
For me when I lived in To, I always checked out the comunity listings, my daughter and I got to trek to lots of parts of the city and explore new things and the bonus most were free or had a low cost!
Ask someone who has lived there for a long time where they like to go.
I’d love this .My kids didn’t get what they wanted for Xmas and either did I.It woudl be such a nice treat ! Thanks for the chance to win ! tammyduc7@yahoo.com
We (hubby, kids and I) just pick a place on the map and go…we take a few extra bucks with us and take our time seeing the wide open planes and enjoy the ride. The roads eventually take us where we need to be. If it looks touristy…we keep driving.
one word: craigslist! i’m a couch surfer, so i find people on craigslist, and the locals are always willing to give you the best view of the town!
My tips for finding cool places is when I’m planning a trip I google the place, and look read reviews for the attractions in the area. Or I end up asking the locals.
I do a ton of google searches for the communities we will be visiting or traveling through.
Good old fashion, go to the library and check out a tourist book of the area. We have found some fun things that way.
Our paper has a great Guide on Fridays with restaurants, events, and other things! Also google a lot!
I often will go places that someone I know IRL has recommended. Or I just take a chance.
I am also giving away a restaurant gift card, if you are interested. Thank you!
I usually rely on people who live there to tell me. It’s one of the great things about the internet. You make friends all over, someone’s bound to have the best ideas about where to go and what to do!
Looks like the contest is drawing traffic
Definitely ask the locals what they do! And of course, google helps too!
I usually go to traveladviser.com and type in the location I’m interested in the search box. People post all the great things to see and do there, as well as the things to avoid.
We like to take our time, wander around and talk to people in the area. We find some great places that way.
I watch some TV shows, so i can know which places to go
I search on the net of the town, area etc. and add keywords like wierd, great, best to the search.
We do it the hard way….ALOT of getting in the car and riding around! But we’ve came across some really great places that way!
sblilly14(@)yahoo(.)com
The internet is such a source of information. Reading travel sites, blogs, bulletin boards, etc. are all very good. Also, asking locals.
We recently started using our GPS to find out what’s nearby, as well. With all the different categories we find lots and lots of stuff we never would have thought of on our own.
google the area and look at the places online…go online and ask on chat boards affordable things and places to go- the locals seem to know alot more and also companies have tours, samples, etc that are free and kids can learn about making pb or making paper- dig deep
Ask the locals!
Thanks for offering it!
princesslimey (at) gmail (dot) com
I love to do some research before I head out of town. There are some great websites online where you can read some reviews from past travelers and most importantly, local residents.
I love finding out about those off the beaten path places to hike, eat and just visit.
I am a tourist trap lover, so I don’t know that I have great advice here, lol. But finding things locally that are amazing has come through talking to people. Word of mouth is great!
We like to go online to different forums before we take a trip and ask for other traveller’s recommendations. That way we know the best places to go before we leave home and can plan our rte accordingly!
I always research the area and find reviews. That way you can always find an interesting place to visit.
I like to research things so I always do lots of searches online about the place. I try to find sites that allows people to write in and tell about what they did on their visit.
Get off the interstate and look for the unusual places in old towns.
I have a bit of an advantage bec I am a travel writer, so the magazine gets press releases and so forth. But also, I am always snooping out stuff online, reading the newspaper and just talking to people. Also, road signs! When you see a historical marker, follow it. Sometimes you discover neat places that really no one much goes to even though there is a sign there!
Thanks for having the giveaway!
Go on vacation with someone who has been there. I saw and ate all sorts of things in St. Croix that were amazing because I went with my friend that used to live there.
Honestly, if it’s local, I’ve found some of the coolest places to “see” are usually free. We’re surrounded by beautiful national forests and parks, perfect for hiking and camping. The beaches are wonderful {when it’s nice out}. If it’s a traveling trip, ask the locals, as they’d know better than anyone the best places to visit {and eat for that matter}.
Usually I just take one of my friend’s advice on what places are worth visiting. She travels a LOT! Other times I just do research. Recently I went to Japan, it was amazing! :
I like to look and research a bit, then plan something according to one’s certain interests…library and computer resources are great…more than one source helps. I find that if a person can relate to the destination, it becomes more than just an attraction.
Thanks for the giveaway….we recently were in Washington D.C. and enjoyed the National Zoo…being animal lovers, it was great to see the Giant Pandas and cheetahs…., and not busy at all, also free.
I do a lot of research read online, local newspapers and also ask the locals. If I have friends that have been to that place I also get the scoop from them.
I usually do a google search on the area or get advice from someone who’s been there before.
New places to visit are usually posted at the local library. Or, be brave and ask a fellow mommy at the playground!
I always pick up brochures and information packets on places I want to go to. Helps alot!
You mean…trying to get lost on purpose
(just kidding). I would do research before I go and then talk with the local residents in the area. In addition, there is a book series called “Off the Beaten Path” series. I own “Oregon Off the Beaten Path: A Guide to Unique Places.”
I look up the community center online. They will usually have a list of stuff that is more geared toward locals.
I am a people person big time. So when we are in a different town or city I will ask anyone cashiers, waitresses, police men, bus drivers what the best things to do, places to eat, fun things, cheap things. I have found some great things this way. Thanks for the great giveaway. Have a Fantastic Day!!!! and Remember NO Question is a stupid Question especially if you end up somewhere great.

This might sound obvious but I find that i find the best stuff by asking other moms who are like me.
We like to drive around and explore a new place or town. We look in local papers and find something great to do and then talk to the locals, they have the best secrets!
tuesdayef (at) aol dot com
We always look for a place to eat where the locals hang out. My husband is very outgoing and can talk to anyone. He asks people what places of interest do they recommend…..we have found some awesome sights by doing this.
I always try to find a local to ask them whats good to see. The internet is a great way to do that. I ask on my blog “have you been here? what did you do?”
We talk to the locals. We’ve been treated to a personal tour of Parliament and tea in their cafe just from talking to a Bobbie. By chatting with a keeper at Cahir Castle in Ireland we got to take a behind the scenes tour. And our B&B hostess in Killarney introduced us to people who opened doors for us at major sites that were closed for the season.
Always talk to locals!
traveler(ta)havekidwilltravel(tod)com
Hmmm… If I know someone who lives in the area, I ask them, otherwise I try to research and read reviews of other people online. The reviews are typically very helpful if there are more than about 10 especially, because you always have some people that have unrealistic expectations and others who are happy with everything.
Do your research online before you leave there. Find out the tourist traps, find advice from LOCALS on what to do there and what not to do!
I would have to agree with talking with locals. I also do a lot of research online before we go someplace, using both travel websites and the community websites. If we are visiting someplace new I also like just driving around! Thanks for the great giveaway!
the locals know all the best and more obscure places thanks for the giveaway
We talk to people in restaurants, shop owners, etc. But I have to confess that I’m not completely altogether against tourist traps. We’ve had a lot of fun at some “touristy” destinations!
wow, this is great, thanks for the opportunity
If people coming up selling you goods usually the price are higher and you need to bargain it to get the best price. This is what happened in Asean country.
Sometimes, we’ll just go exploring. I’ve done this since college, when I didn’t have a car. I would just start walking and see what I would stumble across. A lot of time it’s nothing exciting, but it’s the journey that counts, right?
When I need to find a place that’s off the beaten path and not a tourist trap, I log on to “Beyondthezoo.com.” 95% of the time, it works every time.

When my wife and I were on our honeymoon, we asked advice on where to go from locals rather than the people who were paid to give advice. Asking the guy carrying our bags for advice yielded more authentic results than asking the concierge.
When we were looking for a great place to snorkel, we drove in the direction of the popular tourist trap and then went to the place next door. The water was the same and instead of paying $85 each to get in, Amy and I paid $5 and got the freshest guacamole ever thrown in.
You know how some places where you rent cars say “dont take these roads or this highway.” We ask about them (in our owncar lol) and that is the road we take. We have scene AMAZING things in Alaska. Just beautiful.
When we travel we always ask people who are working where we are like a waiter or a hotel employee. We have even flagged people down and asked if they are local and if they have a good recommendation. We are also up for a good adventure and sometimes if you drive around or take a long walk you can find some really great places. Thank you for the chance to win!
Our first stop on a trip is always a local diner or somewhere that is not a chain. We ask the locals what to do. They will usually give you unique places to see.
Ask around–contact people who live in the area. make phone calls before you go. Maybe the local chamber of commerce would be able to help. Thanks!
I have to agree with everyone who says ask a local. If you research online you might get a lot of info. I would ask the local “Where do you take family/friends who are visiting?”
Get in contact with someone who lives in the area. If you can’t do that visit the welcome center of wherever you are. They usually have pretty good info there.
I think that if you contact their local library they usually have some great suggestions that even locals wouldn’t always think of.
Thanks so much for the AWEsome give-oh-way! audrajjensen(at)msn(dot)com
we’ve learned that the tourist traps are usually right on Main st. or downtown. Sure, we’ll visit and browse but for eating and shopping, we head off the beaten path!
I like to ask the locals. We went to San Diego and ate at the best little breakfast cafe, all thanks to the suggestion of a few beach bums!
Thanks so much for this give~away! : )))
To find off the beaten path places of interest we get in the car and drive…we avoid any repeated signs of attractions…and if we find some place interesting we look at the tags on the cars. If most are local, we go!
i think the best bet would be to ask the locals, you know the one that live there! they would know the best!
thanks for the chance to win!
blessings ~
I usually check the internet and read about places to go but for the most part i check with my hubby since he mans our city’s “to do” page on the internet. LOL
I always ask someone who lives there. The natives always know the best places.
Who better to ask then the local folks? IT’s amazing how helpful local shop owners will be. Thanks for the giveaway!
Citysearch.com or grab any local free publication.
I try and research the area we will be visiting and then asking people for suggestions once we are there! Thanks for the chance to enter!
I like to look for referrals from trusted sources before I dish out the big bucks. I talk with family and friends and also look online. Blogs are a great way to find fun things to do in a local area, too. Thanks!
i usually ask locals when i’m there, and research the web before i go.
OK…I have found Frommers.com or Frodors.com to be invaluable!
I would ask around on my online groups to anyone who may live in that area, that is how I would find a good place.
I usually ask someone who has lived here their whole lives. They usually have the best ideas for places that haven’t been done-to-death already
I am not really good at telling the difference between a tourist trap and something worth my time and money. If it seems like something that interests me, I don’t really mind if it is a tourist trap. I do find that coffee shops are a good place to talk to locals who can point you in the right direction. Thank you for the giveaway!
I do research before going anywhere. I check out reviews online, ask around, and make plans to go places worthwhile.
txhottie_86 at yahoo dot com
Ask your hotel for ideas. It is also a good idea to ask locals you encounter or people that work at the hotel or restaurant you visit.
I am an avid internet researcher. I research everything. I don’t mind tourist traps, but most often I like to find unique things
I usually visit an “official” site, such as the American Association of Museums, to see if a museum is registered or not. I’d hate to land in a “Colonial Museum” and have it be a bunch of poorly-dressed people in a silly modern house! That said, some of those things can be hilarious and fun, so long as they’re not asking for too much money! However, I prefer the “real” stuff.
My best tip would be to get out there and explore! I do collect brochures like crazy and research everything on the Internet, but I love to go to local fairs and discover businesses that way. Just taking the time to walk around and really look at things really helps me to notice things that I never knew were there.
I always go to the local Harley Dealer. The dealers know about festivals and other events happening in their town. They always know where the off the beaten path places to go and which mom and pop restuarants are the best. We have a funny rule, when we are on the road. We don’t eat anywhere we can eat at home. Local restaurants serve great food.
I check out travel websites that allow visitors to add comments about where htey have been. If the majority of reviews are positive I will check it out further
I usually get online and try to google a local mom’s message board for our destination location. Traveling with small children- the mom’s have the best advice about where to go and what is going on in their area.
Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!!
Ask the locals! Check with area clerks etc. If you are renting a car, ask the agent, staying in a hotel ask the desk clerk
I google the area I am going to and spend lots of time on travel forums. What better info than from people who have already been to that area and pass along the info.
GOOGLE! =P
Look up the local paper in that area online. They are all available online now.
I ask people that have been there before or find local information for the area. Sometimes a web search will show you some unique things about the area and then you could ask the locals about them.
I like to ask on a message board from mothering.com or thebabywearer.com for that area, the locals always know the best spots!
I like to ask the clerks at our hotel. They are usually locals and can suggest some of the lesser known, but enjoyable, places to visit.
You have to find a small diner to have breakfast, and sit at the counter and chat with the customers and waitstaff. They will give you honest feedback about the local attractions and heads up on things you may not have considered.
Thanks for the great giveaway. $50 would be so great to win.
I agree the best way to find out about local events is to ask the locals. I also Google to check for events.
I always rely on friends and family to get tips about travel, since they’re more traveled than me. The internet is also great for finding out about local happenings and planned events.
Easiest way to find cool things? Hop on the city bus, ride it around, and quiz everyone who rides with you. We have found some awesome restaurants that way.
I try to find someone who is from the area I am visiting or who has traveled there before, and I pick their brain about the best thing to do. Ask around! Someone always knows someone who knows someone who lived there/is married to someone from there/etc. The internet is a good source, as are social networking places like Facebook and Twitter (where you can let people know you are looking for tips).
Check out the web and the town hall website and local papers on-line. They will tell you what is going on – such as festivals, concerts, theatre.
Great contest. Great prize.
The best way that I have found is to KNOW someone who lives in the area and ask them. Beyond that… I usually do a little internet and travel book perusing.
Maybe $50 is enough, to bring my kids to the zoo…
Don’t be embarrassed to ask the ‘natives’ — see where they go to eat, relax, have fun, etc. Also, if it’s appropriate where you’re at, take some time to either drive or walk around and explore the city. It’s amazing the little gems you can find if you simply take the time and keep your eyes (and mind) open.
Here is what we do. We find a little out of the way cafe and stop in for a cup of coffee. Most of the time the waitresses or waiters are happy to stand for a minute and talk to you. They are working some hard hours for their money and usually always will lead you to some really cool places that cost nothing or next to nothing. We always leave them a nice tip for their time.
(1) Research on the internet. Many sites I belong to you can most – is anyone from here ____ and go from there; (2) ask the cab drivers, they are usually helpful.
Ask! Whenever I am going somewhere I always put out feelers in the online communities where I know there are folks either in that area or who have been there. That way people with similar interests to mine can offer me great advice on what we might enjoy!
jinglesells at gmail dot com
this is awesome =) you know, when i go to another place, i always find time to google and find BLOGS about people’s experiences there. you will see that their recommendations and warnings are much more credible =)
katch05 at gmail dot com
I too usually stick with tourist traps, but the few times we have gone off the beaten path the ideas came from just asking locals or a friend who has been there before!!!
Great giveaway, thanks for letting me enter!
We geocache. Go to geocaching.com and type in your destination. It will bring up all the caches that have been placed there for you to find. Geocaching is like a treasure hunt with a GPS. And because caches are placed by locals, you might find something a little less touristy!
I like to do a search on Switchboard.com for specific areas of interest in a certain zipcode.
The best way we find out where to go is by asking around. Usually we can find a friend of a friend who lives there. TripAdvisor.com sometimes has good advice too. Thanks for the giveaway!
Sorry, my email is
marin (dot) obrien (at) gmail (dot) com
I thought it would register
extensive online research, or local people
I search the internet and read what other people suggest!
Thanks
I always just ask around or read ALL of the parenting magazines!
Before I go to any city I’m not too familiar with, I like to try going into a chat room or message board for people from that location and talk one-on-one with them about finding hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path attractions, restaurants, bars, and shops. I find that the people I encounter online are usually all too happy to give such tips, and it’s nice to get a feel for the flavor of a city and its people before leaving for the trip! As a back-up, there are tons of travel books (like Lonely Planet) and websites (like Trip Advisor) that specifically list places that are less likely to attract tourists – and more likely to give an authentic experience of what a city or culture is really like.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
gkaufmanss@yahoo.com
I like to ask cabbies to point out the local places. Can usually find the best food and adventures that way.
I get ideas from other blogs and just from talking to friends and family.

When traveling out of the Country: I follow the locals when they shop, they don’t shop at the tourist areas, they shop where they get the best deals.
Thanks for the great giveaway!
ask locls and ask people that work in some of the plaaces where to go and the best times to go, I worked at a museam and was very willing to tell people where to go and not to.
thanks
google the area .. places to see, things to do, hotels, food etc.
Thanks for the great giveaway!
I usually try to plan ahead by looking online, but if all else fails ask the locals, but not at gas stations,I have gotten lots of wrong directions and bad instructions from gas stations, that is just my experience though….haha:)
ggp42304(at)gmail(dotcom)
I try to access online a local newspaper before I leave home. You can find out about local events and places to go this way…semtaylor(at)yahoo(dot)com
Well, it might be boring, but we just hop in the car/ van and drive around til we see something that looks interesting (while we’re in a new location). Simple things keep us happy, such as trails, parks, back to nature things where the kids can run and play and have FUN!
I get out of the touristy area, and then look for a place that’s crowded or seems popular.
Thank you for the giveaway!
I like the off the beaten path travel books
Thanks for the opportunity!
Google is your best friend! My husband can find an amazing array of neat things to do using just Google and his imagination!
Usually, I’ll ask the hotel employees where the locals go. I insist they tell me those places that locals love but that tourists seldom make it to.
I network with friends, aquaintances, and co-workers and just take a flyer on a place / activity every once in while, even if I don’t think I’m gonna like it…
When Im traveling anywhere I do my research online ahead of time. I always book with local people and want to go to all the local spots.
I try to find someone who lives in the town to give me advice. Thanks!
I like to research everything.. I mean everything lol Probably best to ask someone that lives there what they recommend.. But even just driving around.. with no time crunch.. its amazing the things you can find.

I do google searches or else we find out if any friends of friends are familiar with the area and ask them questions.
I look online about places I want to visit and even do it kind of old school too by hitting my local library.
I check with the locals I go out to bars/night clubs and ask them. Get a lot of suggestions from locals and you’ll usually be okay. Also ask them about a spot I might be interested in and get any advise and ask if they have been before.
I always ask friends and family for good ideas. If they’ve never been I have them ask their friends until I find someone who can give me some good advice!
What a great prize! Thanks for hosting!
The Internet is the best place to get reviews by other travelers. Colleagues and friends who are adventurous can also be a good source of information.
My best idea would be to ask someone who’s been there or who lives there. The Internet is probably not the best way to find something “off the beaten path.” Thanks for the giveaway!
I check with travel sights I trust-AAA, Lonely planet etc. I have also found lots of great places on the travel channel
I find the little known local activity directory and find some really awesome deals and events that aren’t very well known.
I like to go to travel forums and blogs. I like to get the scoop and ideas from real travelers that have been there, done that. Better than hearing it from a travel agent or official site. Nothing wrong with that but you rarely hear about the less touristy places from them.

I think it is best to just ask around, then you get honest opinions rather than scams!
Goggle…. Talk to people in the area… Or for us we normally stop at places that look local… When I lived in Hawaii I never went to Wakiki but once and that was to show some visitor the place… I actually went to all the hole in the wall local places….
Thanks for the giveaway!
Sounds like a neat idea, I love to know where the locals go
Find a great little “hole-in-the-wall” diner & ask people there for their opinion.
I use the public transportation and travel with the locals.
I ask questions on my blog and my mom’s group forums for tips of good places to go when we are going somewhere we’ve never been. Yahoo has good answers, too.
First I like to google the area and then I call the chamber of commerce for information — and talk to them for a while – not just request info to be sent. I try to find out where THEIR favorite spots are.. I also know of a site called WAYN.com where people write reviews about when they travel to certain cities. I use that a bunch too. It is unbiased and fun to read the reviews that people have put on there. Gather.com also has an area where people have put info about their cities on there too.
I usually just stick to places that I have heard good things about from friends or family. We don’t have extra money to travel a lot, so we stay close. There are a lot of places in our state to experience that I have yet to go see. (7 national parks I think).
Thanks.
I do a lot of research on the net
I research on the internet and also when there ask those who live there recommendations of great places to visit.
I am a pretty reserved/shy person, but when I’m out of town, I love talking to people. They are always helpful and polite – I haven’t been led astray by that tactic. However, I do have a tendency to wander around aimlessly just to see what I can see, so I usually have no idea where I am or where I’m going. Also, if there are lots of t-shirt shops – run from the tourist trap!
If we are staying at a hotel or B&B, we always talk to the people working the desk or the owners to find out where their favorite eating out spot is & what they order. We just move on from there, asking the local what they do, where they go, what they love the most. We have been able to find some awesome diners, tucked away scenic spots that weren’t on any maps and shops that were off the beaten path a bit.
If it’s a small city, go to their city site for a list of fun activities.
Great giveaway! Count me in.

I usually research online or ask locals. =) I would love to win! Thanks for the giveaway!
The internet helps me, I also go in chat rooms around and ask!
Research the area ahead of time
I love going to the message boards on trip advisor and reading all the places people have found off the beaten path. It’s a great way to find hidden gems that save a ton of $$$!
Well we have a rule that when we go on vacation we don’t eat at chair restaurants or shop at any stores that we could shop at home. Then we usually run into locals that way, and we ask them what to do for fun.
I usually ask someone on a street who is obviously a local for advice. We have made some great “finds” like this.
I do alot of research online!! And ask locals.
We usually go to breakfast at a local (not fast food) eatery. People are always happy to direct us to local favorites! Thanks!
First is a lot of research online, the best bet are sites with reviews,
like http://www.tripadvisor.com – one of my favorite, than find local sites and blogs
and you’ll be surprised how much info is out there
And of course once you arrive driving around and asking people!
Thanks
Thanks for entering me! Great Contest!

I visit local pages for the area we’ll be visiting – the chamber or visitor’s site and I’ll read reviews that other people have posted – they usually mention the not -so common areas of things to do.
Do your research ahead of time. With the Internet you can find out everything about the area you will be going to. If you are researching far enough ahead of time you can get brochures in hand from the state, the region, and the city or town. You might also do the same with attractions. Of course, if you want to go paperless and do all your info gathering online, the sky is the limit. If you are willing to invest some time, you will find your travel dollars will stretch much further. You may even buy a coupon book for that town or receive free coupons for meals, discounted lodging etc. A little research work will make you an informed traveler who will enjoy the area much more for what you have learned about it – and you will get more out of your vacation budget since you will make educationed, informed choices on lodging, attractions, meals, etc!
I try to talk to locals whenever I travel – to see what they recommend. Also, check the internet to see more about the attractions – sometimes you can figure out ahead of time if something’s going to be a waste, and there’s often a hidden gem that you hadn’t thought of visiting.
I just ask the locals.
Do research online ahead if time or ask the locals when you get there. Also, ask your hotel desk host where THEY like to go. You’d be surprised the fun places they’ll send you!
I always ask the locals- wait staff, cashiers, hotel workers. If they live there, they know the area a lot better than I do.
locals or someone who has visited there a lot
Ask people on your blog who have been there. You’re bound to get some good responses. Twitter it. Facebook. Ask on any of the social networks. And always ask the locals.
Great giveaway
I usually google it or go to ask dot com and even just drive around and stop at quaint out of the way places. Exploring is half the fun of it!! Blessings, Sherri
Check an area’s website for a calendar of events or find some area newspaper sites (or actual newspapers) and look at their upcoming events. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
I would say ask around or use google
Ask around. People who have been there will tell you what’s really worth your money. People who live there will tell you what they enjoy the most even after all the years they’ve lived there.
i get ideas from the phone book. everytime we travel, i get out the hotel phone book and look for area attractions and coupons… coupons would get you a lot of new traffic. thanks!!
I ask locals a lot, but I also use Citysearch and Yelp online to find reviews, although if something is truly a hidden treasure, people aren’t as likely to post about it.
I usually search for review on the internet. Whenever my husband and I are planning to travel, I look for things to do in the area. If I’m not sure what something is, or if it’s worth visiting, I google it
I have to say that zoos are one of the first things I look for in an area because I’m a huge zoo lover!
I make sure to do a bit of research before I leave and then while I’m there, I make sure to ask some locals on the best places to visit.
Wow, awesome giveaway, Thanks
I use google and alot of asking around on forums.
Look up things to do ahead of time. There are so many reviews online that are really helpful. If it’s a spur of the moment sort of thing, ask about the activity at the desk. They’ll be able to tell you if kids are going to be a bit bored with sitting, or what is required to do. It helped us make up our minds about going to a museum with our six month old a few months ago.
Who doesn’t love love love paypal cash!
wonderful!
The internet is a wonderful tool if you put it to good use. Before you leave for your vacation hit the internet boards customed to the area you plan on visiting. Ask the locals the scoop and where to go, what to eat, what to see, where to stay. They will be honest with you. Also scoop out where you can get coupons for fun, food and hotels.
We personally hate driving on the freeways so if at all possible we take the scenic route, we also talk to truckers, they have been there-done that many times over and they will be honest with you, they are a bunch of good ol boys (and some gals).
Blogs are taking over the nation, search around on them, find out the best places to go, better yet, start your own blog and ask, many nice people out there will share with you.
If at all possible ask for a City Coupon book, you know the ones that you can buy-one-get-one-free (B1G1) deals on tickets or dining, put an ad on craigslist and ask for extras, lots of people don’t use everything in the booklets and they are happy to share, not everyone is greedy and wants something. You could offer to pay postage, sending a small gift card for their time.
Remember to be friendly.
Thank you for the chance to win. I also enjoyed reading everyone else’s responses.
Have a great weekend
A true tourist trap usually have a lot of people, depending on where you are. If you are in Africa in 150 degree heat, probably not too many tourists there.
Also depending on the time of year, there are more tourists.
I like looking online for things to do, ask the hotel where I am staying if they think it’s popular. If you have the right amount of money you can do anything w/o a ton of people, right? If only…
I do alot of research on the internet… google and print out maps from mapquest etc. Then we drive around and take in the scenery…if we haven’t found anyhing interesting on our own, we always stop at a small diner to eat and ask the people in there what is around the area.

I agree with asking the locals.. But I also do a bit of research on the area before I visit. I look for things that our family likes to do.. whether it be a good campground or a lake or such. There is always fun things to do around those types of places.
tmc480 at yahoo dot com
a lot of the places i go to are recommended by family and friends but also, i check some sites on the internet for all the good places in my city. i have discivered many and it’s amazing how all these places can be discovered right at our fingertips!
I like to look at the license plates in the parking lot. If there seem to be a lot of out of state plates and not many local ones, you can bet it’s a tourist trap.
Find some locals on the internet before the trip
Chat them up about the palce before you leave so you’ll already have a heads up about where to go
ask the locals
do an Internet search for blog posts about the location and read about other people’s good & bad experiences
I agree with the majority of posts to ask the locals. And in most cases if you see lots of big billboards advertising it is usually a tourist trap. We have an exception to that rule. Our zoo is world renowned and you will see billboards advertising it. It’s expensive but absolutely wonderful.
I would say to ask the locals. They know what is going on. Otherwise, if I know someone from there, I would ask them ahead of time. The Internet has many resources as well that I would do a lot of research about. Going exploring away from the group is fun. You are able to find little fun places to go to that everyone else is missing out on because they are going to many of the overpriced tourist sites!
My family and I just try to ask friendly locals and so some research online and read opinions on tourist sites and all that to get an idea. For outside of the box ideas, we usually would have to do a little digging in the phone book
I check online or look at the place’s travel brochures.
We ask the people who have been there done that. I use tripadvisor.com’s forums, which are AWESOME!!! There are locals on there and travellers.
Thanks!
I ask my dad, after 60 years of marriage and traveling all over the country with his wife and kids, he has made a point to see every museum, every zoo every attraction. He knows more about this country’s great places to visit than most websites. When that fails I hit the book stores for tourist guides and websites. I probably search for a month or more planning before I make final decisions
I could do some serious ebay shopping with this, thanks for the chance to win!
Leaf changing season through the mountains in mid October. It’s amazing, and all it costs is gas!
I know it’s been said to ask the locals…but how do you know who is local??? Ask employees at the local grocery stores, restaurants, etc.
Befriend locals! If you’re going to a country you know nobody in, look online, email people. It’s amazing how you can find nice, sincere, and willing-to-help people, just by asking nicely.
$50? That’s more than $3! Obviously…
What a cool giveaway. I’m so in.
Read reviews. But most importantly call. If you actually talk to someone you will get a feel for what the place is really like.
When it’s come to San Diego, I ask folks who either live there or who used to live there. Then when I’m in SD I follow folks who live there or used to live there. But most of all, I check out beyondthezoo.com!
I visit lots and lots of web sites, but mostly the ones where everyday people have made comments (mostly forums)
We like to ask the locals sitting at the coffee shop or at the “greasy spoon” restaurant and they usually give great suggestions of places to visit that aren’t selling t-shirts!
